1853 N-18 R1 PCGS MS65                $1850

Beautiful lustrous mint red mellowing to bluish steel brown and olive with half the mellowed mint red remaining, mostly on the obverse. This is a gem cent except for a struck-through line (caused by a piece of lint or fine wire that came between the die and planchet) from the lowest curl passing just over star 13 into the field under star 12. Otherwise the only marks are an inconspicuous nick on the left side of the second T in STATES and another tiny nick that is equally well hidden on the leaf right of the T in CENT. Nicely struck M-LDS, die state b. The die lines behind the portrait are gone but the two dashes at the bottom of the 8 are still visible. A great cent in spite of the struck-through line, and it comes with an important provenance.
